We designed our hand embroidered Wild Strawberry basket as an homage to the beauty of our wild flora and the characterful nature of this dainty yet feisty herb plant. Unfortunately, the wild strawberry with it’s tiny white flowers, juicy red fruits and glossy green, trefoil leaves, is becoming increasingly rare due to habitat loss, and we thought it worthy of celebration. We love that William Morris, famously associated with the British Arts and Crafts Movement, immortalised the wild strawberry in his print design called the ‘Strawberry Thief’, after seeing a Thrush swooping down for the strawberries in his garden at Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire.
The leaves of the wild strawberry have been valued since Roman times for their medicinal properties and in Cornwall young girls were said to rub the leaves on their faces to improve their complexion.
Our original wild strawberry illustration has been embroidered onto the palm leaf market basket bag by the skilful hand of women artisans in Morocco. A sustainable and eco-friendly handwoven tote basket, this design is the perfect size for shopping, foraging trips, picnics and summer days at the beach.
A combination of the time-honoured, traditional techniques of weaving and embroidery make these baskets a fine example of slow craft.
Please note | Our palm leaf baskets are handwoven in the round and feature a 'step' on the rim where they are tied and finished. This is intentional and not a flaw, but rather a part of the design.
